Although many Carthaginian coins from Hispania depict human figures rather than deities, it is not certain whom they represent. However, this portrait is likely inspired by King Hiero II of Syracuse or a member of his family. Hiero II initially supported Carthage but later allied himself with Rome. After his death in 215 BC, his grandson Hieronymus ascended the throne. Hieronymus again sided with Carthage, ruled for barely more than a year, and was assassinated. His coins depict a youthful portrait very similar to the one on this Carthaginian piece.
The reverse of the coin symbolizes military power: it features two shields over a richly decorated galley. Some researchers suggest that the portrait could be that of Hasdrubal, the Carthaginian leader in Hispania who ruled until his assassination in 221 BC. Although there is no conclusive evidence, this hypothesis adds an interesting nuance to the possible interpretation of this coin. Est...4000,00.

Marcus Junius Brutus was a Roman aristocrat who had amassed a fortune by lending money at exorbitant interest rates before being bribed to join the conspiracy against his former benefactor, Julius Caesar. Since a distant ancestor of his had gone down in history as a great tyrant-slayer, Brutus quickly became the de facto leader and spokesman of the assassins.
Following the Ides of March, he persuaded a cowering Senate to grant him the governorship of northern Greece and swiftly set out to raise funds and arms for the looming civil war against Caesar’s supporters. Brutally making his way through Greece, Thrace, and Asia Minor, he plundered the cities’ treasures and levied ruinous taxes at the point of a sword.
He converted these illicit gains into silver denarii to finance his growing army and navy, including this type of military issue.
Brutus and his companions were soon driven into battle against the Caesarians at Philippi (Greece), where Mark Antony proved to be the better general. Brutus took his own life with the same dagger he had plunged into Caesar, earning this rather unsavory figure the posthumous reputation of a martyr for the cause of liberty. Choice VF. Est...2000,00.

This coin, struck at the beginning of Caligula’s reign, is part of a commemorative series honoring his deceased family members, specifically paying tribute to his father, Germanicus.
A distinguished military commander, Germanicus successfully led campaigns against the Germanic tribes (AD 14-16), avenging Varus’ defeat at the Teutoburg Forest and reclaiming two lost legionary eagles. His achievements earned him a Triumph in Rome in AD 17, after which he was sent to Asia to reorganize the provinces.
In AD 19, amid a conflict with the governor of Syria, Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso, Germanicus suddenly fell ill and died under suspicious circumstances, leading to accusations against Piso and suspicions involving Sejanus and even Tiberius.
His death caused widespread mourning in Rome, where he was deeply revered and honored. Caligula’s decision to feature his father’s portrait on this coin was likely a strategic move to strengthen his legitimacy and gain public favor at the beginning of his reign. Choice VF. Est...3500,00.

When Nero committed suicide and the Roman Empire plunged into civil war, Vespasian was in the midst of besieging the city of Jerusalem. On July 1st, 69 AD, the Roman legions stationed in Egypt and Judea proclaimed Vespasian emperor. On December 20th of the same year, Vespasian triumphed over his rival Vitellius, and his appointment was confirmed by the Senate the following day.
Vespasian’s reign was marked by a series of financial reforms and ambitious construction projects. His most famous achievement is undoubtedly the Colosseum in Rome, an amphitheater of unprecedented size. Through his legate Agricola, he also continued the conquest of Britain.
Despite his reputation for being austere (even stingy) Vespasian emerged as a patron of the arts, establishing a special allowance for artists: rhetoricians, poets, and sculptors were effectively placed on the state’s payroll.
After his death in 79 AD, he was succeeded by his eldest son, Titus. Vespasian thus became the first Roman emperor to be succeeded by his own biological son, marking the beginning of the Flavian dynasty. Almost XF. Est...9000,00.
