Las denominaciones de las monedas bizantinas superan el medio centenar y posee una iconografía muy variada, debido a que fue protagonista en acontecimientos tan importantes como la expansión del islam o la llegada de las cruzadas.
Durante este periodo, se utilizaron prácticamente todos los materiales: aleaciones de oro, plata, bronce, electro.
