Claudius

Claudius. Denarius. 46-47 AD. Rome. (Ric-26). (Bmcre-24). Anv.: TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG P M TR P IIII, laureate head right. Rev.: IMPER RECEPT on the top of battlemented wall enclosing praetorian camp in which soldier stands, spear in right hand with aquila in front of him; behind him a pediment with fortified flanking walls. Ag. 3,69 g.

Very well-centered strike. Somewhat porous metal, as usual for this issue. Very rare.

This denarius of Claudius I is an issue of great historical interest, as it directly alludes to his imperial proclamation following the assassination of Caligula in AD 41.

The legend IMPER RECEPT refers to the “reception” or acceptance of the emperor by the Praetorian Guard, the military corps that played a decisive role in his accession to power.

The reverse, depicting the fortified Praetorian camp, the armed soldier, and the eagle, provides a clear image of military legitimization. The coin not only celebrates Claudius’ authority as princeps, but also the political role of the army in the imperial succession.

In numismatic terms, this is a highly expressive type of Claudian propaganda, in which military architecture and martial iconography replace the more usual dynastic or religious motifs in order to emphasize the Praetorian origin of his power

Titus. Aureus. 73 AD. Rome. (Ric-II 1. 551, Vespasian). (Bmcre-110, Vespasian). (Calicó-744). Anv.: T CAES IMP VESP CEN, laureate head to right. Rev.: PAX AVG, Pax standing left, leaning on column to right, holding olive branch and winged caduceus over tripod to left. Au. 7,14 g.

Beautiful and expressive portrait. Knock on edge. Rare.

Although struck under Vespasian, this gold issue portrays his son and heir Titus as Caesar, the title reserved for the designated successor. Its reverse types belong to the broader Flavian propaganda program that followed the Jewish War of AD 66-70 and the triumph celebrated by Vespasian and Titus in AD 71.

Within this context appeared such issues as Judaea Capta, Mars Victor, Roma Victrix, and numerous types alluding to Pax, understood as the peace imposed after Rome’s victory over Judaea. The construction of the Templum Pacis, ordered by Vespasian and intended to house part of the spoils from the Temple of Jerusalem, including the celebrated Menorah, further reinforced this ideological program.

It is possible that this issue was connected with the financing of those building works, perhaps even through the use of gold derived from the war booty

Au. 7,08 g.

Rare, with significant historical context. Lightly rubbed.

This aureus of Trajan commemorates his final great eastern campaign and conveys an unequivocal message of victory and imperial expansion following the conquest of Parthia and the capture of Ctesiphon, the Parthian capital.

The offensive originated in the installation of a Parthian client king in Armenia, a territory over which Roman and Parthian influence had long been contested. Trajan responded decisively: he deposed the ruler, annexed Armenia as a Roman province, and advanced into Mesopotamia, where he secured the submission of various peoples and temporarily consolidated Roman control.

These conquests, however, proved difficult to maintain. After Trajan’s death in AD 117, Hadrian abandoned Armenia and Mesopotamia, relinquishing overextended frontiers in favor of a more compact, defensible, and administratively sustainable empire

Trajan. Aureus. 116-117 AD. Rome. (Ric-II 329). (Woytek-572f). (Calicó-1038a). Anv.: IMP CAES NER TRAIAN OPTIM AVG GERM DAC, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust to right. Rev.: PARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P S P Q R•, radiate and draped bust of Sol to right. Au. 7,08 g.

Traces of luster. Scarce. Ex TOBAL Collection.

In AD 113, Trajan left Rome to embark upon his great campaign against the Parthians. Although Osroes sent an embassy that met the emperor in Athens, the military undertaking had already become irreversible; as R. P. Longden observed, such an attitude of submission probably only strengthened Trajan’s resolve.

In AD 114, the emperor invaded Armenia, deposed Parthamasiris, and annexed the kingdom as a Roman province. The following year he incorporated northern Mesopotamia and captured Ctesiphon, the Parthian capital. Following these successes, he accepted the title Parthicus, which appears in the reverse legend of these issues. The bust of Sol, associated with the East, may be interpreted as a symbolic allusion to Roman dominion over the conquered territories.

The victory, however, proved short-lived. By late AD 116, revolts had broken out in Armenia and Mesopotamia, forcing Trajan to abandon further expansion and focus instead on consolidating his conquests. According to Cassius Dio, while contemplating the possibility of advancing toward India, Trajan lamented that his age prevented him from emulating Alexander the Great
