Lot 35 | Roman Imperial

Lot description

Claudius. Denarius. 46-47 AD. Rome. (Ric-26). (Bmcre-24). Anv.: TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG P M TR P IIII, laureate head right. Rev.: IMPER RECEPT on the top of battlemented wall enclosing praetorian camp in which soldier stands, spear in right hand with aquila in front of him; behind him a pediment with fortified flanking walls. Ag. 3,69 g.

Very well-centered strike. Somewhat porous metal, as usual for this issue. Very rare.

This denarius of Claudius I is an issue of great historical interest, as it directly alludes to his imperial proclamation following the assassination of Caligula in AD 41.

The legend IMPER RECEPT refers to the “reception” or acceptance of the emperor by the Praetorian Guard, the military corps that played a decisive role in his accession to power.

The reverse, depicting the fortified Praetorian camp, the armed soldier, and the eagle, provides a clear image of military legitimization. The coin not only celebrates Claudius’ authority as princeps, but also the political role of the army in the imperial succession.

In numismatic terms, this is a highly expressive type of Claudian propaganda, in which military architecture and martial iconography replace the more usual dynastic or religious motifs in order to emphasize the Praetorian origin of his power
