Unique - AU Details

Philip IV (1621-1665). 4 escudos. 1640. Madrid. B/R. (Cal-Unlisted). (Tauler-Unlisted). (Cy-Unlisted). Anv.: PHILIPPVS IIII (D) G. Rev.: HISPANIARVM (REX). Au. 13,20 g. Unique and of high numismatic interest, this is the first time it has been offered at auction. It is not referenced in the standard catalogs. Assayer B/R on the left, value IIII vertically to the right of the shield. Mintmark not visible due to a flan crack. On the reverse, the date is nearly complete, with the base of the 6 visible and the last two digits very clear, with the 4 rotated. Decorative dots adorn the angles of the cross and the lobed design, a style seen in Madrid half-escudos from 1639 to 1642. Much of the legend is visible, with all "A"s lacking crossbars. The curved stroke on the obverse, next to the crack, indicates it is a rotated "D," common in this issue. Previously mounted in a frame, but with minimal wear or signs of use as jewelry. This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a unique piece, setting a milestone in the study of Madrid mint half-escudos, as this date was previously unknown. Slabbed by NGC as AU Details, Mount removed.
