Philip IV (1621-1665). 4 escudos. 1640. Madrid. B/R. (Cal-Unlisted). (Tauler-Unlisted). (Cy-Unlisted). Anv.: PHILIPPVS IIII (D) G. Rev.: HISPANIARVM (REX). . 13,20 g. Unique and of high numismatic interest, this is the first time it has been offered at auction. It is not referenced in the standard catalogs. Assayer B/R on the left, value IIII vertically to the right of the shield. Mintmark not visible due to a flan crack. On the reverse, the date is nearly complete, with the base of the 6 visible and the last two digits very clear, with the 4 rotated. Decorative dots adorn the angles of the cross and the lobed design, a style seen in Madrid half-escudos from 1639 to 1642. Much of the legend is visible, with all "A"s lacking crossbars. The curved stroke on the obverse, next to the crack, indicates it is a rotated "D," common in this issue. Previously mounted in a frame, but with minimal wear or signs of use as jewelry. This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a unique piece, setting a milestone in the study of Madrid mint half-escudos, as this date was previously unknown. Slabbed by NGC as AU Details, Mount removed.
New world record of hammer price. Est...10000,00.
