NGC - MS 64

China. Chihli. 1 dollar - 7 mace 2 candareens. Year 25 (1899). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). Tientsin (East Arsenal) Mint. (Km-Y73). (L&M-454). (Kann-196). Ag. Incredibly alluring and majestic, this near-Gem from the early years at the East Arsenal Mint offers quality that is undoubtedly rarely seen for the type.

Gorgeous grey patina combines perfectly with a subtle golden and bluish tinge, an exceptionally sharp strike. Features a strong and attractive underlying luster.

Seldom offered in this state of preservation, it survived the so-called 'Boxer Rebellion' or 'Boxer Uprising'. It was a violent nationalist revolt against the presence of foreign governments in China that developed from mid-1899 to the early months of 1901. This is the first sample of this issue that we have the privilege to offer and we are sure that it will receive a lot of attention.

The calendar year output of gold was £414,918 which was the third highest of the reign. Sir Isaac Newton was the Master Worker of the Mint at this time and later went on to officially call the gold coinage the "guinea" in a report made in the Mint papers of 1717. Great Britain. George III (1760-1820). Ag. Bank of England oval counterstamp with the face of George III for circulation of 5 shillings, made in 1797 on a 8 reales minted in 1793 for Mexico during the reign of Charles IV. Sharp and clear countermark. Rare in this condition. Slabbed by NGC as AU 55, C/S: UNC Standard. This counterstamp brought a latent discontent among the English people, given that one real of a 8 stamped was equivalent to a crown minus three pennies, namely 4 shillings and 9 pennies (1 crown = 5 shillings; 1 shilling = 12 pennies). It generated some humorous phrases such as "The Bank (of England) in order to make its money pass, stamped the head of a fool on the neck of an ass". Est...1500,00.

NGC - AU 53 "AUGSTINUS"

Mexico. Agustín de Iturbide. 8 escudos. 1822. Mexico. JM. (Km-313.2). (Fr-59). Au.
Variant legend "AUGSTINUS" for this single year issue. This is the first Mexican gold issue after Spanish domination. Magnificent specimen for the type, with traces of original luster and with good definition of details. Highly desired by specialized collectors in Mexico, even more so in this quality. Slabbed by NGC as AU 53.
This coin is exempt from any export license fee.

Engraved by Jose Torreblanca, the dies for the Iturbide mintage are unusually numerous for mintages issued in only two natural years. The dies were ordered from this artist relatively young and inexperienced by the chief engraver Francisco Gordillo, who preferred him to the possibly more talented José Guerrero for reasons of personal animosity. As a result, Iturbide's issue designs were the subject of profuse criticism, leading to many successive attempts to improve the dies. In particular, the current type was criticized for the weakness of the eagle depicted on the reverse

NGC - AU 53

Mexico. Agustín de Iturbide. 8 escudos. 1823. Mexico. JM. (Km-314). (Fr-60). Au. Single year issue. This is the last 8 escudos of the First Mexican Empire. Very good specimen for this issue, with some traces of luster. Engraved by Jose Torreblanca, the dies for the Iturbide coinage are surprisingly numerous for coinages issued only in two calendar years. The dies were commissioned to this relatively inexperienced artist by main engraver Francisco Gordillo, who preferred him over the arguably more talented Jose Guerrero for reasons of personal animosity. As a result, the coinage designs for the issues of Iturbide were subject to profuse criticism, resulting in many successive attempts to improve the dies. In particular, the present type was chastised due to the weak eagle depicted on the reverse. Almost 200 years later, it now appears charming to the eye of the cataloger, and only adds to the appeal of this issue. A famous and popular type very desirable in this lofty quality. As such, the present example should attract spirited bidding activity. Slabbed by NGC as AU 53. This coin is exempt from any export license fee. Est...7000,00.
