Lot 76 - Spanish Monarchy

Lot description

Charles-Joanna (1504-1555). 1 real. ND. Santo Domingo. S-P. (Sedwick/Rudman-Tipo 1R.9). (Cal-78). (Cy-3060). Anv.: CRAOLVS ET : IHOANA : REX. Rev.: ✠ CAROLAS ✷ ET ✷ IOANA ✷ (REIS) ✷ E. Ag. 3,15 g. Mint mark "S" on the left and "P" on the right, with three stars at the top and one star at the bottom of the pillars.

Very well-centered struck with all details perfectly visible, with only a slight minting void affecting part of the crown and the end of the reverse legend. Dark patina with slight roughness on its surface.

This is an outstanding specimen of one of the most challenging Reales in the entire Spanish colonial series, of which only a few are known, most of them bearing defects or corrosion and rarely available at auction.

This type corresponds to variant 9 from the study by Cori Sedwick and Isaac Rudman on The Silver Coinage of Juana and Charles of Santo Domingo, presented at the latest Convention of Historians and Numismatists held in Santo Domingo in 2023.

Without a doubt, this is a remarkable example, sure to attract considerable attention among collectors of this period
. Almost XF. Est...12000,00.
