Lot 234 - Spanish Monarchy

Lot description

Philip V (1700-1746). 8 escudos. 1725. Madrid. A. (Cal-2183). (Cal onza-369). Au. 26,90 g. Extremely rare, only 3 specimens have been auctioned in the last 25 years. Minor planchet flaw on the reverse, typical for this date.

During a turbulent period in Spain, Philip V secured the duchies of Parma and Tuscany for his son Charles in 1723 and abdicated in favor of his eldest son, Prince Louis. After the premature death of Louis I, who reigned only from January to August 1724, Philip V reclaimed the throne and initiated a major shift in foreign policy by forging closer ties with the Empire through the Treaties of Vienna (1725), in which former rivals accepted the new political order and relinquished their claims.

These coins were minted during this transitional phase between Philip V’s two reigns, as examples of the cross-type 8 escudos with the 1719 design, bearing the mark of assayer Antonio de Cardeña (A)
