Philip V (1700-1746). 1/4 real. ND (ca. 1705-22). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. (Cal-103). (Km-B7). (Restrepo-Unlisted). Ag. 0,60 g. Variety with corded border. Research by Herman Blanton draws a distinction between two types of these Bogota Cuartillos with ornate borders: this corded border and a more embellished type. Attempts to match the castle and lion to punches found on 8 Reales issues were unsuccessful, but because the design matches up quite closely to the security edge used in later milled issues, Blanton surmises that they emanate from the time of Ferdinand VI. As for this simpler corded-border type, loose attribution to the first reign of Philip V is the best guess based on similarities to the borders found on 1721-dated 8 Reales. A similar coin was sold at Stacks&Bowers (12/01/2024), lot 51008 for $4,000. This coin is exempt from any export license fee. VF. Est...1500,00.

Cataluña

Ferdinand VII (1808-1833). 8 escudos. 1814. Cataluña (Barcelona). SF. (Cal-1744). (Cal-1200). Au. 26,90 g.
Dot before the assayers. Nice colour. Minimum defect on the edge and slight scrachts on the obverse, otherwise nice specimen for this mint. Extremely rare.

During the War of Independence against the French, the Catalan ounces were minted in Palma de Mallorca. Due to its insular location, Mallorca was able to assume the production of the Catalan coins that originally should have been minted in Barcelona, Tarragona or Reus. On May 9, 1811, the transfer of the Mint of Catalonia, located in Tarragona, to Palma de Mallorca began. This move was completed on June 2 of that same year, and in August they began minting the coins, a process which continued until June 30, 1814, when the war ended.

These coins bear the mint mark "C", which refers to the initial of the Principality of Catalonia. The initials "SF" correspond to Pablo Sala and Juan Bautista Ferrando. Sala was the first assayer during the War of Independence, and Ferrando was the chief silversmith
