Alfonso IX of León had a long reign marked by conflicts, including with his son Fernando III. He did not take part in the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa and focused on the reconquest of Extremadura. He founded the University of Salamanca, refounded La Coruña, and summoned the Cortes of León in 1188.

In coinage, he minted gold maravedis similar to his father’s but added a bridge, likely the Tormes Bridge in Salamanca, his main mint. The obverse legend is inspired by Psalm LXXI “ad Salomonem”: “God grants your judgment to the King and your justice to the daughter of the king,” a clear allusion to John of Gaunt and his wife Constance, daughter of Peter I.

This silver real, of great historical importance, was struck in 1384 during one of the most turbulent periods in Portuguese history, marked by the succession crisis following the death of King Ferdinand I. Beatriz, the king’s only daughter, was designated heir by the Treaty of Salvaterra de Magos (1383), which stipulated her marriage to Juan I of Castile. This agreement guaranteed the separation of the two kingdoms, even under the same sovereign, and included specific conditions for coinage. Coins had to bear the symbols of Portugal and be issued under the queen’s supervision.

After Ferdinand I’s death, his widow, Leonor Téllez, assumed the regency on behalf of Beatriz. However, her authority was not universally accepted. Many cities and nobles refused to recognize Beatriz as queen, and a revolt in Lisbon proclaimed the Master of Avis as Regent and Defender of the Kingdom. Meanwhile, Juan I of Castile claimed his rights to the Portuguese throne, sparking a struggle for control of the realm.

This coin was minted in Santarém between January and March of 1384, during a period in which Leonor still tried to maintain her authority. The obverse features a bust of the monarch modeled after those appearing on the torneses of Ferdinand I, while the reverse displays the quartered arms of Castile and Portugal, symbolizing the proposed union of the crowns under Beatriz. Curiously, the legend on the coin mentions only Beatriz as queen, with no reference to her husband, Juan I of Castile.

Shortly thereafter, the conflicts between Portugal and Castile escalated. The Castilian troops failed to secure control, and in 1385, the Master of Avis was proclaimed King John I of Portugal. He would consolidate his position following his decisive victory over the Castilians at the Battle of Aljubarrota.

Due to the brevity of its issue and the extraordinary circumstances of its minting, this silver real is extremely rare and highly coveted by collectors—not only for its unique typology, but also for its immense historical significance. Choice VF. Est...50000,00.

It would be a delight for any collector and an excellent opportunity to acquire a wonderful specimen that would be a highlight in any coin collection and we are sure we will not see it offered at auction for many years again. The other specimen (made with the same dies) was auctioned on December 12, 2018, by Áureo & Calicó as part of the Isabel de Trastámara collection, with a hammer price of €65,000.

This exceptional ⅛ real fraction, minted in the Granada mint under Christian rule, stands as a unique numismatic testimony to the political, economic, and cultural unification process undertaken by the Catholic Monarchs after the conquest of the Nasrid Kingdom in 1492. It belongs to the period of monetary reorganization led by the monarchy, aimed at strengthening royal authority through a uniform monetary system centered around the silver real.

Although the Pragmatic of Medina del Campo (1497) is the most well-known legal reference for this reform, its foundations can be traced back to the Pragmática of 1417 (under Juan II), which established the real as the basic monetary unit. From 1475 onward, the Catholic Monarchs revived this model and promoted the issuance of smaller denominations, such as this ⅛ real, to support local trade and circulation in newly incorporated territories.

What makes this coin particularly fascinating is its square shape—atypical within the traditional Castilian monetary system. This form may have been a deliberate strategy to emulate the old ¼ dirhams, which circulated widely in the Kingdom of Granada before its conquest. Thus, this small coin served as a cultural bridge, designed to facilitate its acceptance among the Mudéjar population, blending familiar aesthetics with the Christian symbols of the new rulers: Ferdinand’s yoke, Isabella’s arrows, and possibly the heraldic pomegranate or the “G” mintmark.

As such, this coin carries immense historical and symbolic value, embodying the intersection of civilizations during a pivotal moment in Iberian history. Wonderful old cabinet tone with slight bluish tones enhancing its excellet eye appeal. Slabbed by NGC as AU 55 (Top Pop), the finest known in the NGC and PCGS census.

Undoubtedly, this is a magnificent specimen of one of the most challenging two reales coins from the Spanish colonial coinage, with only a few known examples. Most of those have defects or corrosion and are rarely offered at auction. With an outstanding provenance, it is sure to delight any numismatic enthusiast.

Legends are complete and highly interesting, possibly representing a transitional type, with the C of CAROLVS, the E of REGIS and ET, and the M of ISPANIARVM interpreted as a Gothic D rotated in various positions to form the desired letter. The V of CAROLVS resembles an inverted delta, and the L is depicted as an I.
This very specimen is referenced and photographed in the study by Cori Sedwick and Isaac Rudman on the Silver Coinage of Juana and Carlos of Santo Domingo, presented at the Historians and Numismatists Convention held in Santo Domingo in 2023. Est...15000,00.
