Lot 501 | World Coins

Lot description

Low Countries. United Provinces. 3 gulden. 1790. Brussels. (Km-50). (Dav-1285). Ag. 32,62 g. Superb specimen with dark gray and deep tone and light iridescent hues, mainly bluish, that enhance its tremendous eye appeal. Surfaces with original luster, virtually pristine and with no signs of wear, except on the high points of the relief.

Struck immediately after the insurrection against Habsburg rule, commonly known as the Brabant Revolution. The revolt was precipitated by the reforms introduced by Joseph II in the 1780s, which were perceived as anti-Catholic. The design chosen for this issue is of particular interest, as the obverse bears a striking resemblance to the Calvinist issues struck in Zurich around the same period. An important Crown-size issue in Belgian numismatic history
. Almost MS. Est...3000,00.
