Lot 489 | World Coins

Lot description

British Honduras. George III. Cursive GR countermark beneath crown, within an incuse oval. ND (1810-1818), for circulation as 6 shillings and 1 penny, applied to the obverse of an 1818-JJ 8 reales struck in Mexico under the reign of Ferdinand VII. (KM-M2). (Pridmore-2).

The countermark, alluding to loyalty to George III, is well above average for this issue, and the coin displays cabinet toning with underlying original luster and light bluish hues that enhance its excellent eye appeal.

According to the celebrated collector and author Fred Pridmore, all of the so-called British Honduras countermarks were applied by merchants to facilitate trade with the local indigenous tribes.

We are undoubtedly before a specimen that will attract the attention of numerous collectors. Very rare, especially in this grade.

Slabbed by NGC as MS 62, C/S: UNC Standard (Top Pop), the finest known in the NGC and PCGS censuses
