The first gold coins struck by Castile were the dinars of Alfonso VII in Baeza, which was captured by the King during one of his expeditions south towards the conquest of Almería.

This city remained under Christian control only between 1147 and 1157. The brief duration of its rule means that its mintings are extremely scarce, spanning only from the years 545H (1149) to 548H (1153/4)
