Lot 840 - Spanish Monarchy

Lot description

Philip V (1700-1746). 1/4 real. ND (ca. 1705-22). Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. (Cal-103). (Km-B7). (Restrepo-Unlisted). Ag. 0,60 g. Variety with corded border. Research by Herman Blanton draws a distinction between two types of these Bogota Cuartillos with ornate borders: this corded border and a more embellished type. Attempts to match the castle and lion to punches found on 8 Reales issues were unsuccessful, but because the design matches up quite closely to the security edge used in later milled issues, Blanton surmises that they emanate from the time of Ferdinand VI. As for this simpler corded-border type, loose attribution to the first reign of Philip V is the best guess based on similarities to the borders found on 1721-dated 8 Reales. A similar coin was sold at Stacks&Bowers (12/01/2024), lot 51008 for $4,000. This coin is exempt from any export license fee. VF. Est...500,00.
