Paraguay. 1 cuarto. ND (1866-1869). (Jason-3). (Pratt-MR1). (Km-B2). Ag. 2,72 g. A quarter section of a Bolivia Republic 4 Soles counterstamped with raised "1" punch on hexagonal field with horizontal lines. Struck during the war of the Triple Alliance (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) against Paraguay by the allied armies to provide much needed fractionary coinage. One of the earliest references to the practice of cutting coins is found in the article "Plata Cortada" (Cut silver) published in the January 19, 1870 edition of the daily "La Regeneracion" which stated: "the abundance of cut silver is so great that many commercial establishments have decided to reject them since as many as 6 or 7 seven are being obtained from Bolivian coins of 4 Reales (sic.)"..
