Lot 2672 - World Coins

Lot description

Venezuela. Imitation Cob 4 Reales. Lima. M. (Rosenman-p.44/45 var.). Ag. 9,28 g. Holed. A most intriguing and very rare imitation Cob, this piece likely represents a tacitly approved counterfeit approved by Viceroy Montalvo as necessity coinage.
As few as nine examples are now known of a coinage that obviously would have been withdrawn and discarded as quickly as the authorities could afford to do so. The known date of on these rare issues is usually 800, made with four circles. In this example, only a very faint 1 can be seen, as well as the value 4 inverted under the cross on the reverse. It also presents data on its mint: Lima M, from which we know of no other examples. Apparently unpublished.
This example will certainly intrigue many collectors of Latin American coinage seeking a most interesting piece of numismatic history. Holed
. Almost VF. Est...600,00.
