Lot 235 | Spanish Monarchy

Lot description

Charles III (1759-1788). 4 escudos. 1770/60. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. VJ. (Cal-1856). (Restrepo-65-4). Au. "Rat Nose" type. Clear overdate. No denomination mark. Very rare. Slabbed by NGC as VF 30. Label misattributed by NGC for not indicating the overdate. The famous Rat Nose or Cara de Rata type of the Colombian 4 Escudos was struck only in 1770 and 1771, with no confirmed evidence of a 1769 issue. Both dates are of extreme rarity within the Spanish Colonial series. The distinguished Norweb Collection contained just a single specimen of the 1771/0 variety, while the renowned Caballero de las Yndias Collection included only an example of the 1770/60 issue. Likewise, Eliasberg owned only one specimen of the 1771/0 type. Est...4000,00.
