A storm snapped the anchor line and drove the ship onto the rocks, killing most of the crew and allowing only a single incomplete chest to be recovered. The site was deemed too dangerous for further salvage, and it was not until 1979 that modern recovery began, yielding thousands of coins, including a small but significant group of Guatemalan and Upper Peru cobs—extremely rare in shipwreck contexts.
