Sicily. Syracuse. Tetradrachm. 310-305 BC. Time of Agathokles. (Ierardi-103e). (Hgc-2, 1536). (Boston MFA-463 = Warren 406). Anv.: Head of Kore to right, wearing wreath of grain ears and single-pendant earring; KOPAΣ behind. Rev.: Nike standing to right, erecting trophy to right; monogram to lower left, triskeles to right, AΓAΘOKΛEOΣ in exergue. Ae. 16,68 g. Nice and slight patina. Well-centered. Rare. With the usurpation of Agathokles in 317 BC, Syracuse once more monopolised the right of coinage for the whole of Sicily, even more distinctly than in the time of Dionysios. Yet the reign of Agathokles, as noted by Malcolm Bell (Morgantine Studies I, 1981) "was a watershed for the arts in Sicily, just as it was for politics. The change from a conservative late-classical style to the new modes of the early-Hellenistic period came very quickly, within the space of a decade, and it coincided with the replacement of democratic government by the new monarchy. It is clearly perceptible in the coins that... document the full acceptance of early-Hellenistic style."
Depicted often as a cruel and unscrupulous adventurer and tyrant, Agathokles achieved little of lasting historical importance; indeed after his death anarchy erupted both in Syracuse, where a damnatio memoriae was decreed, and in other places that had been under his rule (Diod. Sic. 21. 18). Nonetheless, his patronage of the arts left a legacy of beauty as embodied by a small number of surviving works of art from his reign, and smaller but no less wonderful objects such as this stunning coin.
Tiny lines on the cheek. Very beautiful

Widely considered to be the most beautiful coins ever struck, the immense silver decadrachms of Syracuse from the later fifth century BC represent the full flowering of classical Greek sculptural art. Syracuse, the foremost Greek city in Sicily, had produced coins of exceptional beauty for nearly a century when, ca. 415 BC, engravers began signing their coin dies. Chief among these were the master engravers Kimon and Euainetos, whose large silver decadrachms seemed to capture the spirit of the artistic and intellectual revolution then sweeping the Greek world. The decadrachm of Euainetos became a widely-copied archetype for Greek coinage, and the master engraver's head of Arethusa remains a paradigm of cool, classical beauty today

Ex Triton V, Classical Numismatic Group (15/01/2002), lot 1762. Ex Robert Schonwalter Collection.

The mint identity and reverse legend of the Augustan CA issues has long been discussed (for a survey of theories see RPC I, pp. 380-381), but the reverse 'CA' may refer to the stabilised Communitas Asiae.

Following the defeat of Antony and Cleopatra, Augustus returned to Italy via Asia, most likely personally sanctioning at Pergamum the temple dedicated to himself and Rome. At the end of the civil war, Augustus sought to restore peace to the empire and to reinforce her frontiers.

This was achieved by establishing diplomatic relations with the surrounding rulers, and the placement of Agrippa as proconsul of Asia Minor once Augustus had returned to Rome in 19 BC

Rev.: GERMANICVS CAES P C CAES AVG GERM, bare head of Germanicus (father of Caligula) right. Ag. 3,71 g. Some displaced strike with full legends. Minor scratches. Very rare. This coin, struck at the beginning of Caligula’s reign, is part of a commemorative series honoring his deceased family members, specifically paying tribute to his father, Germanicus.

A distinguished military commander, Germanicus successfully led campaigns against the Germanic tribes (AD 14-16), avenging Varus’ defeat at the Teutoburg Forest and reclaiming two lost legionary eagles. His achievements earned him a Triumph in Rome in AD 17, after which he was sent to Asia to reorganize the provinces.

In AD 19, amid a conflict with the governor of Syria, Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso, Germanicus suddenly fell ill and died under suspicious circumstances, leading to accusations against Piso and suspicions involving Sejanus and even Tiberius.

His death caused widespread mourning in Rome, where he was deeply revered and honored. Caligula’s decision to feature his father’s portrait on this coin was likely a strategic move to strengthen his legitimacy and gain public favor at the beginning of his reign

Claudius I and Agrippina II. Denarius. 50-51 AD. Rome. (Ric-I 81). (Bmcre-75). (Rsc-4). Anv.: TI CLAVD CAESAR AVG GERM P M TRIB POT P P, laureate head of Claudius I to right. Rev.: AGRIPPINAE AVGVSTAE, draped bust of Agrippina II to right, wearing crown of corn ears, her hair in long plait behind. Ag. 3,65 g. Ligera pátina. Leyendas completas. Muy rara. Ex Oslo Myntgalleri 14, (13/052018), lote 873.

This coin, one of the few Roman issues to depict an empress with her own name, features Agrippina II, wife of Claudius I, with the title Agrippinae Augustae. Her image follows the conventions of her official portrait, but it is notable for the inclusion of a crown of wheat ears, an attribute that associates her with the goddess Ceres, symbolizing fertility and the protection of the household. This iconography reinforces her role as the ideal empress and guarantor of dynastic continuity.
The issuance of this coin was part of a series of five new types aimed at legitimizing Agrippina’s position following her controversial marriage to Claudius and her elevation to the rank of Augusta. The union between uncle and niece was widely disapproved of in Roman society, so the coin’s iconography sought to consolidate her public image. However, more than a marriage of love, this was a strategic move for power on Agrippina’s part.
Shortly after her rise, she began eliminating those she saw as threats within the imperial court. Among her first maneuvers, she accused her rival Lollia Paulina of black magic, annulled Claudia Octavia’s engagement to secure her son Nero’s marriage, and ordered the assassination of Lucius Junius Silanus Torquatus' older brother to prevent any retaliation. This coin, therefore, is not only a numismatic testimony to Agrippina’s rise but also a reflection of the imperial propaganda used to reinforce her legitimacy and influence in Roman politics
