1728 Madrid - AU 55 Top Pop!!

Philip V (1700-1746). 8 escudos. 1728. Madrid. JJ. (Cal-2185). (Cal onza-371). Au. 27,10 g. First bust. Value "E 8" on obverse, flanking the date. Magnificent. Original luster. Extremely rare, no more than 7 specimens known. Slabbed by NGC as AU 55, (Top Pop) the finest and unique specimen registered in the NGC census. Ex Cayón (15/12/2005), lot 4193. This is the first sample of this issue that we have the privilege to offer and we are sure that it will receive a lot of attention.

The year 1728 saw the first production of 8 "bust" coats of arms in Spain, which makes it very special, beyond its scarcity and its impressive visual impact. In 1718, the Madrid Mint was confiscated by the King of Spain and became the property of the Crown. It was located near the Segovia bridge and consisted of two buildings. The mint had 60 employees, two mills and eleven pairs of scissors for cutting coins. In November and December of that year exceptional gold ounces were minted with a unique design, the value mark "E-8" flanking the obverse date. According to Glenn Murray in his publication "Casa de moneda de Madrid. Quantities minted and assayers 1614-1868", he reports that 29 kilos of gold were minted during this year, all in pieces of eight escudos. This means, according to him, 1079 pieces were minted. The seven known examples do not even represent one percent of those minted

Incredibly Rare Guadalajara

Ferdinand VII (1808-1833). 8 escudos. 1813. Guadalajara. MR. (Km-163). (Cal-1747). (Cal onza-1203). (Cy-16416). Au. 26,64 g. Bust with different physiognomy. Minor planchet flaw on obverse and minor scratches. No more than 5 or 6 specimens known. Incredibly rare. It was used as a jewel, nevertheless, it is a very complete struck and we have no doubt that this coin will garner plenty of attention from collectors of this period. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a specimen that would be a highlight in any coin collection and will seldom be seen at auction again.

The Mexican War of Independence, which began in 1810 and ended in 1821, led to the creation of several mints in Mexico. These mints were established in response to the need to mint money to finance the war and to counteract the issuance of counterfeit currency by the insurgents. The first provisional mint was established in Chihuahua in October 1810, followed by Durango, Sombrerete and Zacatecas. Guanajuato established its mint later, in 1817. The Guadalajara mint was founded in 1811, after the Spanish recovered it from the insurgents led by Hidalgo. Although all mints could mint silver coins, only the main mints were allowed to mint gold coins

Gibraltar. 10 bits (Dollar). (1770-1772). (Km-20, Martinica). (Pridmore-16, Dominica). Ag. 22,64 g. Displaying a heart-shaped Type IV countermark cut on a 8 Reales 1757 Mexico. (Cal-493). Nice old cabinet patina with some bluish tones. Slabbed by NGC as AU 55 (Top Pop), the finest known in the NGC census. Collector's label preserved. From a private sale in July 1963.

This series was originally attributed to Martinique in the numismatic literature, where it still appears in KM, but now according to Bob Lyall, in his research of 2007 and 2008, the series with the heart-shaped bitts have their origin in Gibraltar. Lyall has identified four types; the first two he places in the territory now illegally occupied by Spain (characterised by their rougher shape), while type IV (to which this magnificent coin we offer belongs and which is of firmer workmanship with a serrated border on the inside of the stamp) has a rather dubious origin for him. These coins were first minted in Gibraltar around 1761, where they were withdrawn from circulation, destined for Dominica, between 1762 and 1798, as a document from September 1798 has been preserved and made public by Fred Pridmore, which speaks of these coins circulating on this island

1760 NR - Ex Jorge Ortíz

Charles III (1759-1788). 1 real. 1760. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. JV. (Cal-499). (Restrepo-36.1). Ag. Very rare, even more without hole. This piece has two small letters engraved on the reverse. Slabbed by NGC as VF Details, Graffiti. Ex Jorge Ortíz Murias Collection. A wholesome coin, choice for the designation with only limited wear and quite handsome toning over attractive and problem-free surfaces. Considerable detailing of the handsome design remains visible to the naked eye, including the "PLUS" and "ULTRA" inscriptions on the pillars.  The minor coins struck in Nuevo Reino with the pillar type design have traditionally been praised as part of the classical and more desirable rarities of the entire Spanish Colonial series. Only two denominations were issued (½ Real and 1 Real, both dated 1760) with a total confirmed population of less than fifteen examples (the ½ Real being currently unique and impounded in a major collection). Most of the surviving specimens (struck from the same pair of dies, as could be expected since obviously struck in very limited numbers) of the very rare 1 Real 1760 NR-JV are worn and/or impaired. As such, we expect strong attention from the specialists of this ever popular series: this may well represent the only opportunity to secure and unflawed and attractive example of this issue for many years. The only one known

Venezuela. Non-adopted trial set of obverse and reverse of 100 Bolivares. Thomas de la Rue, signed and dated 20 October 1950. Paper money on cardboard. The only one known.

American Bank Note Company had been the exclusive banknote printer for the Banco Central de Venezuela since its inception. In fact, almost all the banknotes issued by the private banks since the end of the 19th century had also been printed by the renowned printer.
It was not until 1952 that Thomas de la Rue made his debut in Venezuelan banknote printing with the series of rusticos or orejones. Unfortunately, his debut was rather uneventful, as his original interpretation of Espinoza's Bolívar was rejected by the public, in particular because of the size of the ears of the bust of the Liberator, which gave the series its famous nickname. There was no choice but to withdraw them from circulation and replace them progressively with new issues of the "classic" type designed by the American Bank Note Company.
The experience of the BCV board was not a pleasant one, as it was not until 1960 that Thomas de la Rue was given a new opportunity, this time with much more success than the previous one. To the point that they printed almost all Venezuelan issues until the early 1980s. The importance of this rare proof is that it bears witness to the fact that by 1950 the BCV was already in talks with Thomas de la Rue, who in turn was presenting very different proposals, both in terms of colour and design, from those already being produced by the American Bank Note Company.
In this important set of proofs, we can see the same bust that would be used on the obverse of the 10 Bs of Marshal Antonio José de Sucre, as well as Thomas de la Rue's most emblematic design for Venezuela, the reverse with the Campo Carabobo Monument, which would be used on several issues until the end of the 1990s. This is the only known proof of this printing house dated and signed
