Tunisia Countermark - PCGS

Tunisia. Mehmed IV. 8 reales. 1080 H (1669). (Wilski-Tun-206). (Km-10). Ag. 26,73 g. Counterstamp in Arabic script within a double square border, linear and beaded, applied to the reverse of an untrimmed 8 Reales from Potosí, minted under the reign of Philip IV. The counterstamp is strong and clear, with a pleasant, light old cabinet tone.

Extremely rare, even more so by being on no cut host coin. Fewer than a dozen examples with this type of counterstamp are known across all denominations, and this particular specimen is considered the most complete and best-preserved of all. Slabbed by PCGS as VF 35, C/M on Bol 8R XF Details (Top Pop), the finest known in the NGC census.

Most of these counterstamps are found on Mexican 4 Reales coins, which further highlights the rarity and numismatic significance of this piece. This issue is noteworthy not only for its exceptional nature but also for the remarkable journey it undertook, traveling from the mint in Potosí, South America, to North Africa.

A unique opportunity for collectors of colonial coinage with a strong international influence and a history that reflects the global circulation of Spanish coinage during this period.

The attribution of this counterstamp to Tunisia is based on the discovery of a hoard of approximately 1,000 cob coins of 4 Reales in a remote Tunisian village, three of which bear this type of counterstamp. This archaeological context strongly suggests Tunisia as the origin of these countermarks, adding significant historical value to this extraordinary piece.

1 real Santo Domingo!!

Charles-Joanna (1504-1555). 1 real. ND. Santo Domingo. S-P. (Sedwick/Rudman-Tipo 1R.9). (Cal-78). (Cy-3060). Anv.: CRAOLVS ET : IHOANA : REX. Rev.: ✠ CAROLAS ✷ ET ✷ IOANA ✷ (REIS) ✷ E. Ag. 3,15 g. Mint mark "S" on the left and "P" on the right, with three stars at the top and one star at the bottom of the pillars.

Very well-centered struck with all details perfectly visible, with only a slight minting void affecting part of the crown and the end of the reverse legend. Dark patina with slight roughness on its surface.

This is an outstanding specimen of one of the most challenging Reales in the entire Spanish colonial series, of which only a few are known, most of them bearing defects or corrosion and rarely available at auction.

This type corresponds to variant 9 from the study by Cori Sedwick and Isaac Rudman on The Silver Coinage of Juana and Charles of Santo Domingo, presented at the latest Convention of Historians and Numismatists held in Santo Domingo in 2023.

Without a doubt, this is a remarkable example, sure to attract considerable attention among collectors of this period.

Copper Pattern - MS 64 BN Top Pop!!

Mexico. 5 pesos. 1873. Mexico. M. (Km-Pn131). Ae. Copper Pattern. Reeded edge. A special issue with a limited number of pieces, produced exclusively as gifts or presentations for high-ranking individuals. Lovely color and fine design enhance the visual appeal of this piece. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a specimen that may not reappear at auction for a long time, sure to attract significant attention from collectors of Mexican numismatics. Extraordinary and of the highest rarity, possibly unique. Absent from both the Pablo Gerber Collection and the Banco de México Collection. From the old collection of a Mexican diplomat in Spain. Slabbed by NGC as MS 64 BN (Top Pop), the best preserved specimen in the NGC and PCGS census.

From 1868, Mexico’s mints were administered by the Secretariat of Development to promote mining activity and innovation in coin design. In this context, the 1868 decree initiated a contest for engravers, aiming to elevate the quality of Mexican coinage.

On April 19, 1869, the Mexico City Mint began decimal minting in silver, extending to gold in 1870. This 5 pesos specimen from 1873 belongs to that experimental minting series, displaying the inscription “LEY” in small lettering; variants with “LEY” in larger lettering are also known. Additionally, other trials exist, including a 5 pesos copper pattern dated 1870 and a 1 peso specimen from 1873, which was auctioned by Ponterio & Associates on June 8, 1985, as part of the Alfredo Porraz Collection in Lot #413.

The existence of these patterns reflects the innovative and experimental spirit that characterized this transitional period in Mexican numismatics, establishing this piece as a true historical gem and of high value to collectors.

Philip IV (1621-1665). 4 escudos. 1640. Madrid. B/R. (Cal-Unlisted). (Tauler-Unlisted). (Cy-Unlisted). Anv.: PHILIPPVS IIII (D) G. Rev.: HISPANIARVM (REX). Au. 13,20 g. Unique and of high numismatic interest, this is the first time it has been offered at auction. It is not referenced in the standard catalogs. Assayer B/R on the left, value IIII vertically to the right of the shield. Mintmark not visible due to a flan crack. On the reverse, the date is nearly complete, with the base of the 6 visible and the last two digits very clear, with the 4 rotated. Decorative dots adorn the angles of the cross and the lobed design, a style seen in Madrid half-escudos from 1639 to 1642. Much of the legend is visible, with all "A"s lacking crossbars. The curved stroke on the obverse, next to the crack, indicates it is a rotated "D," common in this issue. Previously mounted in a frame, but with minimal wear or signs of use as jewelry. This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a unique piece, setting a milestone in the study of Madrid mint half-escudos, as this date was previously unknown. Second known example

The Crown of Aragon. Peter of Portugal, Count of Barcelona (1464-1466). Dobler. Menorca. Imitating the Majorcan types struck by Juan II (1458-1462). (Acta Numismática-nº43). Anv.: + IOHANES : DEI : GRACIA : REX. Crowned bust facing forward within a lobed frame. In the upper right field it seems to have a mark in the shape of a slightly elongated roundel.. Rev.: + ARAGON(UM nexated) - ET MAIOR. Cross. Bi. 0,98 g. Circular frame on the obverse. The second known example. Of the highest numismatic interest. Menorca, May 15, 1465. Don Pedro of Portugal, at the request of the university of Mahón, granted a license to its syndics and the island of Menorca to mint 2,000 pounds of Doblers. These coins were to be of the same standard and follow similar designs to those issued in Mallorca, for which Don Antonio Solsona was appointed as mint master.
In Acta Numismática 43, the article "És aquest el dobler de Menorca de Pere de Portugal (1464-1466)" details the reasons behind the minting of this coin, entirely unknown until the appearance of the specimen published in that issue.
The reasons highlighted in Acta are as follows:
1.No Dobler with a lobed border is known. Such borders are found only in gold and silver issues, never in billon.
2.All Dobler or Dinero issues from Mallorca from Sancho to Ferdinand the Catholic feature marks on both sides of the bust, referencing the mint masters.
3.The bust on this issue has a somewhat unique style, but the primary difference lies in the art of the legend’s lettering.
4.Most Doblers of Alfonso and John II are common, or scarce in the case of obols; however, the coin presented here was entirely unknown until the publication of its "sister" in Acta Numismática 43.
The specimen offered shares the obverse die and shows a fully legible obverse legend, "+ IOHANES," in contrast to the previously known and published example, which had an incomplete legend. This specimen also appears to have a mark in the upper right field of the obverse, an elongated pellet resembling a "G" and engraved in positive, ruling out a countermark. This makes this second known specimen unpublished as well.
Undoubtedly, this Dobler holds immeasurable value, not only numismatic but also historical, for the Balearic Islands and Catalonia, given that Don Pedro of Portugal (1464-1466) governed both regions.

Kingdom of Castille and Leon. Henry IV (1399-1413). 1 real. Toledo. (Bautista-Unlisted). (Imperatrix-E4:9.65 or 66 var). (Abm-Unlisted). Anv.: ✠ ENRICVS : QVARTVS : DEI : GRACIA : REX : CA. Rev.: ✠ ENRICVS ✿ DEI ✿ GRACIA ✿ REX ✿ CASTEL. Ag. 3,28 g. Mark "T" behind the bust and no marks on the reverse. Unpublished and offered at auction for the first time. This piece holds the highest numismatic interest and may generate some controversy, as some authors might classify it as from Tortosa.

Catalan numismatography tends to attribute pieces with the letter “T” on the obverse to the city of Tortosa during the period when Henry IV was claimed as governor of Barcelona between December 1462 and April 1463. There is little actual basis for this hypothesis: first, there is no record that Don Henry minted anything there; second, the Aranda Ordinance prohibited the minting of coins after April 24, 1461, and Tortosa only became loyal to Henry at the beginning of 1463, when minting was already discontinued; and third, everything written on medieval coins is in Latin. Therefore, if they were from Tortosa, they should have been marked with the letter “D” instead of a “T,” as the Latin toponym for that city in Tarragona was “Dertosa,” which is why its inhabitants are still called "Dertosenses" today.
